When to use this visual

Use this visual during:

  • education sessions on hypoglycemia
  • when a patient is newly diagnosed
  • when reviewing symptoms of low blood sugar
  • after a patient has experienced a hypo
  • when supporting parents, caregivers or teachers
  • when someone is unsure of what hypo symptoms can look like

Purpose of this visual

This tool is designed to:

  • help recognize the early signs of hypoglycemia
  • show the range of physical and emotional symptoms
  • reduce fear and confusion
  • support faster recognition and response
  • validate that symptoms can feel different each time
  • create confidence in managing low blood sugar
  • support conversations about real experiences

How to use it with parents

Step 1
Start with the top section and explain what hypoglycemia is in simple terms (low blood sugar).

Step 2
Move through the symptoms together. Point to each illustration and ask if any feel familiar.

Step 3
Pause and ask “Have you felt any of these before”? Allow space for them to connect to their own experiences.
